Island Classic 2012 Part 4 – Katana

80’s superbikes are awesome, classic styling and big HP. The Katana would have to be one of my favourite bikes from this era and the few examples that get raced each year in the Unlimited Forgotten Era category are incredible machines.

The #99 bike is ridden by Steve Martin (ex-WSBK rider and World Endurance Racing Champion) and this year took the period 5 lap record with a time of 1m38.707. To give you an idea of how that compares to some modern bikes the current Moto2 lap record is a mid 1:m34. Pretty incredible times for a production based naked bike that is approaching 30 years of age.

The #99 bike and the #19 bike ridden by Shawn Giles (3 times ASBK champion) fought it out at the front of the pack in all their races, a great battle that made for exciting racing.

The #7 bike was not quite as quick but for me it was the best looking Katana of the meeting.
